The entire studio erupts as T’Challa deduces the unforgivable culinary crimes of Karen’s potato salad

babygirlSeptember 24, 2026

If you think the regal, utopian wisdom of an African king can easily navigate the street-smart survival code of working-class America, prepare to watch vibranium collide with the sacred laws of the neighborhood cookout.⠀

What unfolded on live television in April 2018 wasn’t just an iconic Saturday Night Live sketch—it was a culturally transcendent, laugh-out-loud masterpiece that took a global cinematic phenomenon and baptized it in pure, unfiltered reality.⠀

Just two months earlier, Marvel’s *Black Panther* had shattered international box office records, transforming Chadwick Boseman into an immortal pop-culture icon and giving the world the awe-inspiring, uncolonized Afrofuturist paradise of Wakanda.⠀Audiences across the planet were mesmerized by T’Challa’s aristocratic dignity, his philosophical calm, and a fictional nation with free universal education, advanced tech, and flawless civic trust.⠀Until the reigning King of Wakanda steps away from his throne, stands behind a plastic game show podium on *Black Jeopardy*, and realizes he has absolutely zero idea how to survive on a block in America.⠀

Hosted by Kenan Thompson’s immortal character Darnell Hayes—who proudly announced that this was the only *Jeopardy* where the prize money is distributed in installments—the stage was set for comedy history.

⠀Standing at the first two podiums were two street-savvy regular contestants: returning champion Shanice (Leslie Jones) rocking a yellow floral tracksuit, and Rashad (Chris Redd) sporting a leather hoodie and heavy gold chains.⠀And at the third podium stood Chadwick Boseman, fully in character as T’Challa, dressed in an immaculate, intricately embroidered black African tunic.⠀Darnell could hardly contain his excitement: “All the way from Wakanda, it’s T’Challa! Boy, this might be the blackest Black Jeopardy yet!”⠀Darnell introduced the iconic, rhythmically tailored board categories: “Grown Ass,” “Aw, Hell No,” “Fid’na,” “Girl, Bye,” “I Ain’t Got It,” and the perennial staple, “White People.”

⠀

The regular contestants immediately tore into the board with lightning-fast street instincts.⠀Under “Aw, Hell No,” when a barber with a two-hour wait offers an empty front chair, Rashad buzzed in without blinking: “What is, aw hell no, there’s a reason your chair empty! You gonna end up looking like The Weeknd!”⠀Under “Fid’na,” when schools threaten to take prayer out of class, Shanice fired back: “What is, and they wonder why everybody pregnant?!”⠀T’Challa stood watching quietly, his hands folded in royal composure, treating the game like a diplomatic foreign summit.⠀Then came the prompt that exposed the cultural Grand Canyon between Wakanda and the diaspora: “This is the reason your cable bill is in your grandmama’s name.”⠀T’Challa hit his buzzer, stepping to the microphone with solemn, royal grace: “What is… to honor her as the foundation of the family?”⠀The studio exploded into laughter.⠀Darnell looked back with a slow, sympathetic wince: “Hmm… that’s really nice. It’s wrong, but it’s really nice!”⠀Shanice buzzed in to deliver the cold American financial truth: “What is, cause I’m fid’na to get a car and I don’t need all that on my credit!”⠀”Yes! I feel you!” Darnell yelled. “And your grandmama ain’t gonna need that good credit too much longer!”⠀Every time T’Challa tried to apply the pure, honorable logic of a wealthy African monarchy, the realities of American working-class life slammed right into his face.⠀

When a student loan officer from Sallie Mae calls to collect, Rashad answered that he can’t pay because he faked his own death and they’re talking to a ghost.

⠀When an airline demands $25 to check a bag, Shanice declared she would fly to Jamaica with a 50-pound hard-shell suitcase sitting right on her lap.⠀Then came “Grown Ass” for $600: “You send your smart-ass child here because she thinks she grown.”⠀T’Challa hit the buzzer with heartfelt pride: “What is… to one of our free universities, where she can apply her intelligence and perhaps one day become a great scientist!”⠀Darnell stared in pure disbelief: “Okay… well, the answer we was looking for was: out my damn house! But you know what? I’m gonna give it to you, T’Challa… y’all might not know mean streets in Wakanda.”⠀T’Challa took the lead, selecting “Aw, Hell No” for $800: “The police man says there have been robberies in your neighborhood and asks: do you have information?”⠀T’Challa answered with civic purity: “What is, not only do I tell this man what I know, but I also assist him in tracking down the offender. After all, our ministers of law enforcement are only here to protect us. Is this correct?”⠀The studio went dead quiet, letting out an audible, collective groan.⠀Darnell looked down, shaking his head with heavy, tragic resignation: “It should be… but oh, you ain’t spent much time here in America.”⠀To ease the tension, the show paused for authentic sponsor prizes: “Uesta Hold Margarine”—the reusable plastic butter tubs you keep in your fridge forever—and “Well-Done Steaks,” because if you see a single speck of red, it’s going back to the kitchen.⠀And that is when T’Challa faced the ultimate test of cultural assimilation.⠀Holding the board, T’Challa took a deep breath: “Okay… I am ready. Let’s go to ‘White People’ for $400.”⠀Darnell read the fateful clue: “Your friend Karen brings her potato salad to your cookout.”⠀T’Challa paused, tilting his head with royal contemplation.⠀”I think I am getting the hang of this,” he announced softly. “But before I answer, I have a few questions… This woman, Karen… she is Caucasian, yeah?”⠀

“Yes,” Darnell nodded.

⠀”And she has her own recipe for potato salad, yes?”⠀”Yeah,” Darnell replied cautiously.⠀T’Challa looked into the camera, slowly piecing together the unwritten culinary laws of the Black American experience: “Oh, I understand… It is noble that she would volunteer to cook for everyone. And although I have never had potato salad…”⠀”Yeah, of course,” Darnell smiled.⠀”…I sense that this white woman does not season her food,” T’Challa deduced with rising confidence.⠀”That’s right!” Darnell beamed.⠀”And if she does, it is only with a tiny bit of salt?”⠀”That’s exactly right!”⠀”And NO paprika?!”⠀”YES! That’s exactly right!” Darnell urged, leaning over the podium.⠀T’Challa leaned in closer, dropping the final, unforgivable truth: “And she will probably add something unnecessary… like RAISINS.”⠀”I know, right?!” Darnell yelled.⠀”So… something tells me that I should say…” T’Challa hesitated.⠀”Say it!” Darnell pleaded.⠀Chadwick Boseman slammed his hand down, throwing all his royal Wakandan composure out the window and screaming with pure, righteous street indignation: “AW, HELL NO, KAREN! KEEP YOUR BLAND-ASS POTATO SALAD TO YOURSELF!”⠀The studio detonated into pure pandemonium.⠀

Darnell threw his hands into the air, dancing behind the desk as Shanice and Rashad erupted into ecstatic cheering.⠀”YOU GOT IT! YOU GOT IT, T’CHALLA!” Darnell screamed over the roaring audience. “Black Panther, welcome to Black Jeopardy!”⠀For a fleeting second, the gap between a fictional African paradise and the raw, humorous reality of Black American survival vanished into thin air.⠀Before they could even celebrate, the sound of white couples casually discussing gentrified three-bedroom real estate echoed from off-stage, signaling that the party was officially over.⠀Accumulating over 35 million views, this 2018 appearance remains one of the most beloved and endlessly quoted sketches in Saturday Night Live history.⠀

It serves as an unforgettable, heartwarming tribute to the immense comedic genius and magnetic warmth of the late Chadwick Boseman—a true king who proved that whether on a majestic throne in Wakanda or arguing over potato salad on a game show, greatness is all about finding common ground with the people.
