There are comedy routines that depend on costumes, wild characters, or complicated setups.

And then there is Abbott and Costello proving that 7 times 13 equals 28.

Anyone who passed elementary-school math knows immediately that something is terribly wrong.

Seven times thirteen is ninety-one.

But Lou Costello does not care.

In his world, the answer is twenty-eight—and somehow, for several glorious minutes, he makes that ridiculous conclusion sound almost believable.

That is the genius of the classic “7 x 13 = 28” routine.

The premise could hardly be simpler. Abbott and Costello are dealing with their landlord, who wants the rent he is owed. Thirteen weeks at seven dollars per week should come to ninety-one dollars. But Lou is given twenty-eight dollars and challenged to explain how that amount could possibly be correct.

Most people would surrender immediately.

Lou grabs the chalk.

And that is when the trouble begins.

A Math Problem That Should Be Impossible to Win

The comedy starts with something everybody understands: money.

If the sketch had simply begun with an abstract equation written on a chalkboard, it might have felt like a classroom lesson.

Instead, there is something at stake.

The landlord wants his money.

Lou does not have enough.

So suddenly mathematics becomes a survival skill.

Lou needs $28 to somehow become the correct payment for a $91 debt.

There is only one tiny problem.

Math refuses to cooperate.

But Lou Costello has never been the kind of character to let reality get in the way of a good argument.

Rather than accepting that he is wrong, he decides to prove that everyone else is wrong.

That attitude immediately creates the perfect comedy situation.

The audience knows the correct answer.

The landlord knows the correct answer.

Abbott probably knows the correct answer.

Lou is apparently the only person in the room who believes that twenty-eight makes perfect sense.

And yet he approaches the problem with such confidence that, for a few seconds at a time, you may actually find yourself following his logic.

That is where the routine becomes brilliant.

First, Lou Tries Division

Lou begins his mathematical demonstration by working backward.

If 7 times 13 supposedly equals 28, then 28 divided by 7 should equal 13.

Of course, it does not.

The correct answer is four.

Lou has another idea.

He manipulates the traditional long-division process one step at a time, treating the digits as though they can be moved, separated, and recombined whenever it helps him reach the answer he wants.

He starts with the 28.

Seven cannot go into the 2 the way he wants, so he effectively puts that problem aside.

Then he turns his attention to the 8.

Seven goes into 8 once, leaving one.

Now things start getting dangerous.

Lou takes that leftover one and combines it with the earlier two to create twenty-one.

Seven goes into twenty-one three times.

One.

Three.

Thirteen.

There it is.

According to Lou Costello mathematics:

28 divided by 7 equals 13.

Completely wrong.

Beautifully delivered.

And somehow hilarious.

The audience can see exactly where the trick happens, but Lou keeps moving quickly enough that his reasoning creates the illusion of legitimacy.

The trick is not really about mathematics.

It is about confidence.

Lou never behaves like a man desperately inventing nonsense.

He behaves like a professor explaining something painfully obvious to a slow student.

That confidence is what sells the joke.

The Landlord Is Not Convinced

Naturally, the landlord does not accept the division demonstration.

And this is important.

If he simply believed Lou immediately, the routine would end.

Instead, he becomes the audience’s representative.

He knows something is wrong.

He just has to figure out exactly how Lou is doing it.

So he demands another method.

Fine.

Forget division.

Multiply it.

Surely multiplication will expose the trick.

Lou is ready.

Seven times three is twenty-one.

So far, everything is correct.

Then comes seven times one.

Seven.

And Lou essentially treats those results as numbers that should simply be added together.

Twenty-one plus seven equals twenty-eight.

Therefore:

7 × 13 = 28.

Case closed.

At least according to Lou.

The beautiful part is that every individual number he says sounds reasonable.

Seven times three really is twenty-one.

Seven times one really is seven.

Twenty-one plus seven really is twenty-eight.

Every little piece appears correct.

It is only the way Lou connects those pieces that is completely wrong.

That is what makes the routine so satisfying.

He is not simply shouting a ridiculous answer.

He builds a road toward that answer using legitimate mathematical facts placed in exactly the wrong order.

Correct Steps, Wrong Logic

This is one reason the routine remains funny even after you already know the joke.

Lou’s arguments are constructed from pieces of truth.

That makes the nonsense surprisingly convincing.

Imagine someone telling you:

“Two plus two equals nine.”

There is no joke there.

It is simply wrong.

But Lou does something much smarter.

He gives you several statements that are individually correct, then connects them incorrectly and races toward an absurd conclusion.

Your brain keeps saying:

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

“Wait… WHAT?”

That tiny moment of mental confusion is the joke.

For half a second, you understand how he arrived at twenty-eight.

Then your common sense catches up.

And before you can fully process the mistake, Lou is already moving to the next demonstration.

It is verbal sleight of hand.

Instead of hiding a playing card, Costello hides a mathematical error.

Then Comes the Addition

By now, the landlord knows he is being fooled.

Division failed to expose Lou.

Multiplication failed too.

So he tries the most straightforward possible method.

Forget formulas.

Forget multiplication.

Forget division.

Just write thirteen seven times and add the numbers together.

There should be nowhere left to hide.

Seven groups of thirteen must equal ninety-one.

Surely Lou cannot escape this one.

So Lou writes the numbers down.

Now the landlord gets involved with the addition.

And this is where the routine reaches another level.

The 3s add up to twenty-one.

Then Lou jumps into the process and begins counting the 1s in exactly the way he needs to push the total upward from twenty-one until he reaches twenty-eight.

Once again:

Twenty-eight.

The impossible answer has returned.

Three different mathematical methods.

Three demonstrations.

Three opportunities to prove Lou wrong.

And somehow all roads lead to $28.

It is nonsense operating with the confidence of science.

Lou Costello’s Face Makes It Even Better

Reading the mathematics on paper explains the trick.

But it does not explain why the routine is so funny.

For that, you have to watch Lou Costello.

His expressions are essential.

Lou does not simply perform the calculations.

He reacts to every challenge as though he cannot believe anyone would question his mathematical expertise.

His entire attitude says:

“How many times do I have to explain this to you?”

That reversal is hilarious.

He should be embarrassed.

Instead, he becomes increasingly confident.

Meanwhile, the people around him—the ones who actually understand arithmetic—become increasingly frustrated.

Costello’s innocence is one of his greatest weapons as a comedian.

His character does not necessarily feel like a dishonest genius pulling off an elaborate scam.

He feels like someone who has become completely trapped inside his own logic.

The more everyone tells him he is wrong, the more determined he becomes to prove himself right.

And every successful demonstration makes his confidence grow.

Abbott Knows Exactly When to Let Lou Run

Of course, the routine would not work the same way without Bud Abbott.

Abbott and Costello’s partnership was built around contrast.

Bud was usually the faster-thinking straight man.

Lou was emotional, confused, stubborn, excitable, and often completely certain about things he did not understand.

That contrast created a perfect comedy engine.

Abbott could establish the situation and then allow Costello to drive it into chaos.

The straight man is incredibly important in routines like this because somebody needs to represent normal reality.

If everybody behaved like Lou, there would be nothing strange about his mathematics.

But put his reasoning next to a character who understands how the world is supposed to work, and the absurdity becomes obvious.

That dynamic helped make Abbott and Costello one of America’s most recognizable comedy teams.

Their comedy frequently depended not on complicated stories but on misunderstandings that became increasingly impossible to untangle.

It Has the Same Comedy DNA as “Who’s on First?”

For many audiences, Abbott and Costello will always be associated most strongly with “Who’s on First?”

The famous baseball routine works because ordinary words become sources of endless confusion.

A name sounds like a question.

A question sounds like an answer.

Every attempt to clarify the situation makes the misunderstanding worse.

For a few minutes, Costello creates a universe where arithmetic follows his rules.

And the funniest part?

By the time he finishes all three demonstrations, a tiny part of your brain almost wants to believe him.

Almost.

So the next time someone tells you that 7 times 13 equals 91, just remember Lou Costello standing there with complete confidence.

He may not have had the correct answer.

But he definitely had the funnier one.
